Frequently asked questions
What does heat pump sizing mean?
All heating and cooling equipment should be selected according to the site and the site requirements, the right equipment in the right place and everyone is happy. The same is especially true the other way round. Factors to consider include the power output of the unit at different outdoor temperatures and the temperature of the outgoing water. AirTreater/Cáhci offers exceptionally high outlet water temperatures with compressors alone, +75°C at outdoor temperatures of -15°C and 55°C at outdoor temperatures of 25°C.
In practice, this means that a 50kW rated boiler, for example, will only deliver 21kW of compressor power at -20°C outdoor temperature. This logic applies to most good basic equipment. There are technical solutions to keep the power higher, but usually at the cost of a drop in efficiency over the whole temperature range.
Air to air heat pump sizing should be done carefully and professionally. The output of heat pumps is given in accordance with the standard at an outdoor temperature of + 7 °C. As the air gets colder, its energy content decreases, as does the energy available from it, the power.
In practice, this means that a 50kW rated boiler, for example, will only put out 21kW of compressor power at -20°C outside. This logic applies to most good basic equipment. There are technical solutions to keep the power higher, but usually at the cost of a drop in efficiency over the whole temperature range.
Well-known, high-quality manufacturers are very transparent about the performance of their products. Similarly, high quality products are Eurovent certified, which guarantees that the declared performance values are correct. If this information is not available, it should be taken seriously when making decisions.
Why is it important to pay attention to the actual heating capacity?
For example, if the power requirement is 100 kW, two 50 kW heat pumps drawing energy from the air will give a combined maximum output of about 42 kW. Either the difference must be made up by a back-up system, oil or electricity, or alternatively the whole system can be implemented with three pumps (3*21 kW = 63 kW) or four (84 kW).
The investment becomes more expensive, the efficiency improves and the lifetime of the equipment increases.
Either way, it is worth making sure that the prospective supplier understands what he is doing and that the required heating capacity is achieved under all circumstances.
What does a backup system mean?
A heat pump that draws energy from the air must never be the sole and only source of heat, but requires a full backup system. There are products on the market with very creative designations. For example, there may be a product that is advertised as a 100 kW VILP solution, but there is, say, only a 40 kW electric boiler.
When it’s -35°C below zero the heat pumps run out of power and if the boiler doesn’t produce more than 40 kW we all have a problem on our hands. So the power promised for the product must be available in all weathers. Those days are few and far between, but they must be taken into account. Here AirTreater products are absolutely uncompromising: the rated power is always reached, the maximum power is significantly higher with AirTreater products.
Choosing a backup system
In practice, the backup system can be either electricity or oil. Oil is a bit out of fashion these days, but it has many excellent benefits. Electricity is easy and cheap to set up and, as we rarely have extreme temperatures, if the system is otherwise well sized, running costs are not a big issue. The downside of electricity, however, is the fuse size it requires. If there is, say, one week in the year when you have to run all your power on a backup system, then your monthly payments will be 12 months/year.
A 100 kW electric boiler needs 3*200 amp. fuses, and there are few places where these are available, in addition to other uses. A modern oil boiler, on the other hand, has excellent efficiency, and we recommend the use of condensing oil boilers. They last a long time in such irregular use and have an annual efficiency of 95-07%, using HVO or similar renewable oil we are almost emission free, emissions are reduced to 90% of the original emission level. Electricity demand is minimal compared to an electric boiler, if necessary the condensing oil boiler and the whole system can be run on an aggregate or inverter and batteries in emergency mode.
How does remote monitoring work in AirTreater products?
Remote control means controlling the device from a location other than the control panel of the device itself. Remote monitoring also allows any alarms to be sent to the desired addresses/numbers. Biegga has advanced Ouman control which provides 24/7/365 access to Biegga from anywhere with a GSM/trunked connection. Analysing possible faults or making adjustments on behalf of the customer is then really fast and cost-effective from anywhere.
We also offer the possibility of 24/7/365 remote monitoring where alarms are routed to a service centre that can take the necessary action to ensure the problem is resolved as quickly as possible.
What types of applications are AirTreater products suitable for?
AirTreater products are quite versatile. The size of the room and further energy consumption must either be determined from past consumption or estimated by calculation. The size of a farm for even the smallest Biega is between 500 and 1000 m2 , depending on the energy efficiency of the farm. The Biegga is suitable for spacious spaces where air distribution through ducts is easy to implement. The Čáhci is suitable for more mazelike spaces and for spaces where liquid-cycle energy distribution is desirable. The Čáhci can also cope with very low electricity consumption if an integrated condensing oil boiler is used, if necessary with a very low fuse size/aggregate.
How long does it take to install a Biegga system, for example?
AirTreater products are pre-packed in shipping containers and the on-site deployment is very smooth. The connection of the container itself can be done in one working day, the whole process depends, for example, on the construction of the necessary heat distribution system.
If no heat distribution is required, the AirTreater can be up and running in one or two working days.
How does a heat pump work?
The heat pump exploits the dependence of refrigerant and pressure. As the pressure rises, the temperature rises and as the pressure falls, the temperature falls. This allows energy to be extracted from the outside air even if the temperature is only -25°C.
